Abstract
3 - Keto - 4,5 - unsaturated steroid compounds are subjected to nuclear dehydrogenation by contacting said compounds with the oxidizing activity of a species of the genus Mycobacterium. This process may be carried out by bringing the steroid into contact with either an actively growing culture of Mycobacterium, with cells of Mycobacterium removed from the growing culture and suspended in a suitable medium, or by contacting the steroid with extracts of oxidizing enzymes obtained from the culture of the species of the genus Mycobacterium. The submerged aerobic fermentation is preferably effected between 25 DEG and 30 DEG C. Nuclear dehydrogenation is mainly in the 1,2 positions. Starting materials include testosterone, stigmasterone, 17-hydroxydesoxycorticosterone, and desoxycorticosterone and in addition the examples utilize compound S and progesterone. The examples disclose the use of Mycobacterium smegmatis, M. phei, M. ranae, M. butyricum, M.berolinase, M. thamnopheos, M. friedmanni and M. tuberculosis.
