Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0787308/IV (b)/1> and acid addition salts thereof, in which R1 is an alkyl group of 2 to 5 (preferably 2 or 3) carbon atoms, R2 is an alkyl group of 1 to 5 (preferably 1 or 2) carbon atoms and R3 and R4 are alkyl groups of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the total number of carbon atoms in R3 and R4 together, preferably ranging from 2 to 5. The compounds are made by reacting a ketone of the formula R1O.C6H4 CO.CH2R2 with formaldehyde and a secondary amine NHR3R4, prealdehyde and a secondary amine NHR3R4, preferably in the presence of a hydrohalic acid. The compounds are used as local anaesthetics, suitably in the form of their salts with hydrohalic acids. In examples, (1) p-ethoxypropiophenone is treated with dimethylamine hydrochloride and paraformaldehyde to give a -methyl - b - dimethylamino - p - ethoxypropiophenone; and (2) p-propoxypropiophenone is reacted with dipropylamino hydrobromide and formalin to give a -methyl-b -dipropylamino-p-propoxypropiophenone; other specified products of the invention are a -methyl-b -diethylamino - p - propoxypropiophenone, a - methyl-b - diethylamino - p - ethoxypropiophenone, a -methyl - b - dimethylamino - p - propoxypropiophenone and a - methyl - b - dipropylamino-p-ethoxypropiophenone, all the above products being isolated in the form of their hydrohalide salts.
