Abstract
786,868. Finishing fabrics. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. July 26, 1955 [July 26, 1954], No. 21593/55. Class 42 (1). A process for reducing the tendency of a fabric, containing staple synthetic fibres, to produce pills, comprises effecting random flattening of the crosssectional dimensions of the fibres in the exposed crowns of the yarns of the fabric, and thereafter compressing the flattened fibres, at the points at which flattening has occurred, against adjacent fibres, whereby the flattened fibres are locked within the body of the fabric. Fibres may be randomly flattened by brushing the surface of the fabric gently with a rotary brush covered with card wire acting on the fabric as it passes between two guide rollers or as it passes over a stationary backing surface. The ends of the wires 1 are ground to present a toe 2 and a heel 4, the relative movement between the wires 1 and the fabric 5 being, as shown, such that the wires exert a heel-toe action. After brushing, the flattened fibres are locked within the body of the fabric by shrinking, e.g. by heating in an overfed pin tenter. Alternatively the fabric may be shrunk by a chemical treatment or by a combination of chemical and physical treatment.
