Abstract
786,640. Cathode ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 21, 1954 [Oct. 23, 1953], No. 30400/54. Class 39(1). The metal cone of a cathode ray tube or metal envelope part of other vacuum vessels such as large rectifying tubes is reinforced by means of a framework forming a cage and extending over the entire length of the metal envelope part, the reinforcing members being secured to, but not formed from, the cone wall. In one form the cone of Ni-Fe alloy, ferrochromium or steel and made by drawing, pressing or rolling is reinforced by a framework comprising rings 1, 2, Fig. 1, connected by four thin rods 3. The rods 3 engage the cone on its inside or outside and the rings 1, 2 are secured to the ends of the cone by copper soldering, or welding at a few points. The cone may have reinforcing embossed ridges 7, Fig. 2. The reinforcing framework may alternatively be of sheet material or may be built up on the cone wholly or partly by the Schoop method or by electrodeposition of metal, preferably iron. The rings 1, 2 need not be closed. In further forms there may be a plurality of rods, or ridges built up by the Schoop method or the reinforcing member of Fig. 1 may be pressed into a metal cone and secured thereto. The ends of the reinforcing framework are more rigid than the central parts. The invention can also be applied to large rectifiers having cylindrical metal walls.
