Class 120(3) In the production of a bulk yarn comprising intermittent short lengths of looped, curled, or convoluted filaments separated and projecting from the body of a filamentary yarn, a running multifilament yarn consisting at least mainly of a synthetic linear polymer having little i.e. not more than ten turns per inch, or no twist is passed between two surfaces which are themselves in relative motion, at least a component thereof being parallel to the axis of the yarn, and which bear resiliently on the yarn, so as to effect the separation of random lengths of filaments: the yarn is then twisted or further twisted. The yarn may comprise filaments of polyamides, polyesters, polyureas, polyurethanes, polyaminotriazoles, and contain a minor proportion of filaments or fibres of wool, cotton, cellulose acetate, viscose or polyvinyl chloride. The bulk yarn may be treated, as by doubling, braiding, looping, steam-setting, dyeing, or sizing preparatory to knitting, warp-knitting, or weaving. The surface(s) may be formed by two rubbing pads or revolving discs, or at least one roller. or a pin or flat shoe, of abrasionresisting material e.g. glass, ceramics, vulcanite, carborundum, rubber, agate, stainless steel, alumina, or titania, which will grip the filaments, and loaded by adjustable springs. The bulk yarn about to be twisted -is subjected to a light tension as by passage through a gate tensioner or a false-twisting device.
