Abstract

An anhydrous, crystalline sodium borate composition (B2O3:Na2O equals 3.7 to below 4 : 1) and comprising mainly sodum 1.4 borate (Na20.4B2O3) is prepared by moving a feed composition (preferably continuously) of B2O3, Na2O and H2O with a B2O3/Na2O molar ratio of 3.7 to below 4 through a heating zone to produce a fused anhydrous melt and cooling. The mixture which preferably contains not more than 30 per cent by weight of water is preferably calcined before moving through the heating zone to remove the water of hydration. The cooling should cause complete solidification during a cooling time of an hour and the melt is removed from the heating zone in a form that the volume/surface ratio allows this cooling time. Suitable feed materials described are (a) sodium borate (B2O3/Na2O ratio less than 4) with boric acid or sodium 1.5 borate; (b) granular calcined borax containing not more than 2 mols. of water and granular boric acid; (c) crystalline sodium 1,2-borate pentahydrate and crystalline boric acid; (d) calcined sodium 1.5 borate and calcined 1.2 borate in a 1.3 to 1.9 to 1 ratio, with a water content of less than 30 per cent by weight; (e) the 1.5 borate may be produced in situ. Sodium 1.5 borate is produced by (a) reacting sodium 1.2 borate with boric acid in a current of hot air; (b) tumbling granular borax and boric acid in molar proportions 1:6 in a calciner in a stream of air at 85-100 DEG F.; increasing the temperature to evaporate water as fast as it is released and when reaction is complete evaporating to produce dry 1.5 borate; (c) dissolving boric acid and sodium 1.2 borate (e.g. calcined borax) in water and crystallizing 1.5 borate.
