Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain flaky aluminum boride of a great aspect ratio, by a procedure in which a mixture of boron and aluminum is heated for reaction and then dipped in an aluminum-eroding liquid.
CONSTITUTION: Given amounts of boron and aluminum are weighed in a crucible, and the crucible is heated to a temperature above the melting point of aluminum, whereupon reactions such as the melting of aluminum, dissolution of boron into the molten aluminum, and the crystallization of aluminum boride take place. Then, the system, when a thermal equilibrium is reached, is cooled to ordinary temperature. The substance thus formed is dipped in an aluminum-eroding liquid, e.g., an aqueous hydrogen chloride solution, an aqueous alkali hydroxide solution, etc., to remove residual aluminum in the substance by dissolution in order to obtain a mixture of aluminum boride and unreacted boron. Then, flaky aluminum boride is sorted out of the mixture. For the mixture of boron and aluminum, the amount of boron is preferably 6 atomic % or less, and the preferred reaction temperature for the mixture is 1,350W1,450°C.
