Abstract

Phosphate rock, containing calcium carbonate, is reduced to a particle size of from 30 to 170 mesh, treated with sufficient 5 to 10 per cent aqueous sulphuric acid to convert part or all of the carbonate to calcium sulphate and the sedimeting phosphate is separated from the suspension of sulphate. The phosphate may be subsequently converted to superphosphates by known methods.
