[Also in Group XXXVIII] A variable inductor for use as an accelerometer has a laminated magnetic core 10, 13 comprising two magnetic circuits having a common air-gap 16, means for setting up an alternating current field in each of the magnetic circuits, a short-circuited coil 19 weighted so as to have substantial mechanical inertia and supported so that only a part thereof moves across the magnetic field in the common air-gap 16 against the action of a spring 22 to vary the reluctances of the two magnetic circuits, response means-such as coils 18-being provided for deriving a signal dependent on the relative values of the reluctances. The alternating current field may be set up by supplying alternating current to the primary winding 17 or by supplying alternating current to the windings 18 connected in a bridge circuit with fixed resistors, the winding 17 being dispensed with. Movement of the coil 19 in one direction due to the acceleration of the vehicle carrying the device causes an output to be developed by the coils 18 oppositely connected in series which output is indicated in magnitude and sense by an instrument 24. Retardation is indicated when the coil 19 moves in the opposite direction.
