Abstract
785,151. Dashpots. ALL AMERICAN ENGINEERING CO. Sept. 21, 1955, No. 26978/55. Class 108(3) [Also in Group XXXIII] Four dashpot devices used in an aircraft arresting gear are shown. In each case, engagement of an aircraft with a wire D pulls a piston allowing restricted passage of fluid, through a fluid filled cylinder 16. In Fig. 3, the piston comprises a body 36, formed with a chamber 39 in which slides a piston 361 attached to the valve 37, which co-operates with a seat 40 formed on an annular member 41 connected by supports 42 to the body 36. The chamber 39 is filled with fluid under pressure, and thus the valve is urged on to its seat. The wire D is attached to a rod 33 connected to an arm 34 of a bell-crank lever, the other arm 35 abutting the piston 36<SP>1</SP>. A pull on wire D thus presses the piston back against the pressure in chamber 39, opening the valve to permit restricted fluid flow. In Fig. 7, the valve comprises a head 70 co-operating with a seating formed on an annular member 66. The valve is urged against the seating by a piston 71 subjected to pressure on the left hand side as shown. A pull on the wire D opens the valve when the pressure in the right hand part of the tube 16 has built up to a predetermined extent. In Fig. 8, the wire D is attached to a valve head 79 which co-operates with a seating 93. The valve is again urged closed by a biased piston 84 in a chamber 83. A pull on wire D opens the valve directly. Movement of the valve is damped by a piston 90 formed on the same stem, working in a cylinder 87 and provided with bleeds 91, 92. In Fig. 9, a pyramidal structure 99 connects an annular piston with the wire, and each of its four faces contains a flap valve 96 urged to the closed position by a spring 97.
