Abstract

785,143. Engine cooling. FRANK, W., and CAROLI, G. Aug. 8, 1955, No. 22826/55. Class 7(2) The fan 5 for the liquid-coolant radiator 6 of an engine 1 is driven by a hydraulic motor 4 fed by a hydraulic pump 2 separate from or unitary therewith, and the rate at which fluid is delivered to the motor 4 is infinitely variable in dependence upon the liquid-coolant temperature to give the cooling air circulation rates required for efficient engine cooling under varying operative conditions. As shown, the pump 2 is directly driven by the engine and the pump displacement volume is controlled directly or through a pipe line 9 by a thermostat 8 in the coolant circuit. Alternatively or additionally, a by-pass 11 in the hydraulic circuit may be controlled by a thermostat 12 in the cooling circuit.
