Abstract

1455819 Control of cooling fans TASK POWER & CONTROL Ltd 8 Nov 1973 [9 Nov 1972 9 Aug 1973] 51893/72 and 37851/73 Heading FIB [ Also in Division F2] An engine cooling fan 303 is driven from a pulley Fig. 2, (not shown) via a friction clutch 302 engaged and disengaged by the expansion and contraction respectively of material (e.g. wax) in an actuator 301 through which engine coolant flows. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4 the actuator has the form of a pump to promote this flow which is from the hot side H of the radiator 304 when a thermostat valve 308 is open and the clutch is to be engaged and when the valve 308 is closed the clutch is disengaged by flow through the actuator from the cold side C of the radiator 304 through a one-way valve 310. This control of the fan 303 ensures that it is either engaged or disengaged, and does not partially engage. The engine may be a diesel engine.
