Abstract

770,945. Valves. CAROLI, G. June 10, 1955 [June 12, 1954], No. 16768/55. Class 135. A valve for controlling the circulation of a hydraulic fluid to a motor driving, for example, a fan cooling water for an internalcombustion engine, in dependence upon the temperature of the cooling medium, comprises a thermostat B, Fig. 1, installed in piping A through which the cooling medium circulates, a spring-loaded valve piston 48 having a rod 50 engageable by a rod 20 of the thermostat and an apertured sleeve 44 in which the valve piston slides to control the flow of oil between a connection 38 connected to a supply pump and a sump connection 39. Connections 41, 40 lead to the inlet and return sides respectively of the hydraulic motor. On an increase in temperature of the cooling medium the rod 20 moves the valve piston 48 against its spring 53 to close sleeve apertures of differing sizes and arranged at varying levels to reduce the amount of oil returned to sump and increase the supply of oil to the hydraulic motor which will eventually start the motor to drive the fan. A spring-loaded pressure-relief 76, Fig. 2, may be fitted between the valve inlet chamber 54 and the valve outlet chamber 81 to restrict the pressure of the oil supplied to the motor to limit its speed. A pivoted, two-armed lever 58 having an adjusting screw 60 provides a means of adjusting the valve piston so that a minimum proportion of the oil is always supplied to the motor so that the motor can run at some determined minimum speed independent of the thermostat at temperatures below the corresponding minimum temperature.
