784,968. Positive clutches. PEDDING- HAUS, P. C., and PEDDINGHAUS, W., [trading as PEDDINGHAUS, P. F. [Firm of]]. Nov. 7, 1955, No. 31793/55. Class 80 (2). The rim of a driving gear-wheel 16 rotating clockwise of Fig. 1 is formed with a number of recesses 15 which can be engaged by a single pin 3 spring biased radially in an arm 2 fast on a driven shaft 1, the underside 11 of an arm 8' turning about a fixed pivot 9, engaging an axial projection 5 on the pin 3 to draw the pin radially inwards and disengage it from its recess 15 as the clutch rotates. A downwardly projecting tab 22 on the arm 8 is engaged by the projection 5 to stop the driven member of the clutch in the predetermined position shown in Fig. 1. To prevent rebound of the driven clutch parts when the projection 5 engages the tab 22, the projection 5 may ride over a spring-biased latch (not shown) on the lower surface of the arm 11 before engaging the tab. The leading edges 18 of the recesses 15 are sloped down from the inner rim of the gear-wheel 16, so that the trailing edges 17 of the recesses are deeper than the leading edges. To re-engage the clutch, the arm 9 is turned about its pivot 8 until it is clear of the projection 5 on the pin 3. The clutch is particularly intended for use in machine tools such as shears, knives and presses.
