Abstract

In a process for cooling combustible gases from which in the final stages of cooling viscous bars and possibly also carbon and naphthalene separate out, e.g. gas made by reacting a fuel oil with steam in the presence of a catalyst, the hot gases are first passed at 10 into a scrubber 11 where they are cooled with water introduced at 13 to a temperature above those at which tarry or solid deposits tend to build up in the scrubber and the connections, and then into a secondary scrubber 16 where they are further cooled by spraying in a solvent for tar and naphthalene which is recirculated from the bottom of the scrubber to the sprays 17 through a system including a seal pot 19, a settling tank 20, a pump 26 and a water-cooled tubular cooler 28, cooled gases leave at 18 for further treatment. Suitable solvents for the scrubber 16 are creosote and other tar fractions, light tar, oils and in some tar obtained in the gas-making process. A portion of the circulating solvent is continuously or periodically withdrawn from the circuit by the pump 25 and returned to the circuit after being subjected to a steam distillation or replaced by fresh solvent.
