Abstract

Normally liquid aliphatic hydrocarbons containing 0.01 to 1.0 per cent by weight of lower dialkyl sulphates are treated to remove the dialkyl sulphates by intimately contacting the aliphatic hydrocarbons with concentrated sulphuric acid and an isoparaffin containing up to 6 carbon atoms, allowing the mixture to separate into a hydrocarbon layer and an acid layer and draining off the acid layer. The process is preferably carried out at 30-150 DEG F. using isobutane or isopentane as the isoparaffin. Sufficient pressure is maintained to keep all the reactants in the liquid state. In examples, the process is applied to the desulphurization of n-heptane and an alkylated gasoline having a molecular weight of 114.
