Abstract
Alkyl benzenes, e.g. having 8 to 18 carbon atoms in the side chain are purified by contacting with benzene and either aluminium chloride or a liquid aluminium chloride-hydrocarbon complex in the presence of anhydrous hydrogen chloride or an alkyl chloride. The liquid aluminium chloride hydrocarbon complex may be formed from the alkyl benzene to be purified or the starting reagents used to prepare the alkyl benzene. The purification may take place for 0.1 to 5.0 hours at 0 DEG to 100 DEG C. using a mole ratio of benzene to alkyl benzene of 0.1 : 1 to 10 : 1 and 0.05 to 20% by weight of aluminium chloride or aluminium chloride hydrocarbon complex based on the alkyl benzene used. Sufficient hydrogen chloride may be used to saturate the hydrocarbon layer at atmospheric pressure which is separated from the liquid aluminium chloride hydrocarbon complex, washed with water, alkali, or treated with clay or silica gel and then fractionally distilled at less than 300 DEG C. to separate off the benzene from the alkyl benzenes. The aluminium chloride hydrocarbon complex may be recycled.
