1287640 Recovering m-alkyl phenols HODOGAYA CHEMICAL CO Ltd 3 Dec 1969 [4 Dec 1968 31 Jan 1969] 59074/69 Heading C2C A process for recovering m-alkyl phenol comprises testing a mixture of m-alkyl phenol and other alkyl phenols, in liquid phase and in the presence of a strong acid having a dissociation constant of 10<SP>-3</SP> or more at room temperature or a solid acidic oxide containing silica and alumina, to cause dealkylation of alkyl phenols other than m-alkyl phenol. Examples describe the treatment of mixtures containing m-tertiary butyl and -amyl phenols and m-isopropylphenol in the presence of sulphuric acid or acid clay as catalyst. The m-alkyl phenol is recovered by distillation.
