Abstract

1415145 Diene-phenol reaction products BAYER AG 1 March 1974 [3 March 1973] 9319/74 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C7] Diene-phenol reaction products generally having an OH number of from 140-410 are obtained by the reaction of isoprene or butadiene with phenol preferably in a molar ratio of from 1 : 1 to 1 : 10 at a temperature of from 40-250‹ C. in the presence of from 0À5-8% wt. of an acid catalyst, e.g. anhydrous acids, Fuller's earth, acid-activated aluminas and ion-exchange resins. In particular embodiments a mixture of diene-phenol reaction products having the following composition:- 24-6% wt. of (A) of formula 50À6% wt. of an isomeric mixture (B) of formulae and 24À8% wt. of (C) (unknown components) is obtained by reacting isoprene and phenol in a molar ratio of 1 : 1 at 90-95‹ C. using as catalyst 4À3% wt. of montmorillonite (acid activated alumina). If a molar ratio of 1 : 5 and 1À3% wt. of said catalyst are used a mixture of the following composition is obtained:- 77-8% wt. (A); 15% wt (B); 7À2% (C). A molar ratio of 1 : 10 and 1% wt. of said catalyst yields the following mixture:- 86% wt. (A); 8À7% (B); 5À3% wt. (C). The isomeric mixture (B) can be isolated by gas chromatography after silylation. Similar isomeric mixtures are obtained by the reaction of butadiene and phenol.
