Abstract

The disproportionation of an ethyltoluene to toluene and 3,5-diethyltoluene is effected in the presence of a complex of a solid Friedel-Crafts compound and a hydrogen halide under anhydrous conditions. The preferred feed is a reformate fraction boiling in the range 161-168 DEG C. which also contains mesitylene. The mesitylene is unchanged but forms a complex with the catalyst as does the diethyltoluene. The complex product is preferably extracted with a solvent, e.g. n-heptene to remove toluene and the complex decomposed with water to recover the mesitylene and diethyltoluene. The molar ratio of ethyltoluene to aluminium chloride may be 1-10:1 and reaction is effected at 0-50 DEG C. The preferred catalyst is aluminium chloride-hydrogen chloride.
