Abstract

783,986. Vehicle windows. BEATON & SON, Ltd., G., CREBER, R. W., and SIMPSON, E. Feb. 27, 1956 [March 7, 1955], No. 6681/55. Class 20(3) A window for a vehicle comprises a slidable glass panel 11 and a hingedly mounted glass panel 12 mounted respectively on support rails 13, 14 on a member 15 secured to the lower rail of a window frame 10, the support rails 13, 14 being engaged respectively by hose-like carriages such as 17 and 26, which are secured within channels in the lower glazing rails of the panels 11, 12. Each carriage, having its underside formed with a key-hole shaped groove corresponding in cross sectional shape to its supporting rail 13, or 14, carries a friction and anti-rattle shoe 19 which is pressed down on to the respective rail 13 or 14 by means of springs 21 reacting against the underside of the associated channel. The panel 11, with its upper edge only partially engaged in an upper channel of the frame 10, is readily inserted into, or removed from, the frame 10 by sliding. it to a position where the carriages 17, register with two gaps 22, 23.in the support rail 13, the gap 23 normally being' filled with a removable stop 24. The hinged panel 12 does not engage a channel at the top of the window frame and thus can be swung inwards by an amount limited by a draught excluding stop 29. The hinging movement of the panel 12 is effected by a mechanism comprising a link 32 pivoted at one end, at 33, to a frame 31, for the panel 12, the other end carrying a pin 34 which slides in a slot in a bracket 35 secured to the top of the window frame 10. Pivotally mounted in the link 32 is a lever 36 on which 'is eccentrically mounted a pin 37 which projects into a slot 38 formed in a plate 39 secured to the adjacent frame 31. The hinged panel 12 may be removed from the frame 10 in the same way as the panel 11. i.e. by detaching a stop 28 and sliding its two carriages into gaps in the supporting rail 14. The panel 11 is provided with a finger grip 20. In a modification the rail supporting the sliding panel 11 is mounted along the top of the frame 10 to depend therefrom, the lower edge of the panel being guided by the upstanding sides of a channel member. Alternatively, in the case of a vertically slidable window, the rail supporting the sliding panel can be mounted along one of the vertical sides of the window frame, a channel member serving as a guide for the panel, being secured to the opposite vertical side of the frame.
