1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to window frame construction and more specifically to the sash holding and guiding portion thereof.
It has among its objects the provision of means. by which sash may be easily removed if desired, for cleaning many other purpose.
Other objects will readily occur to those skilled in the art upon reference to the following description and the accompanying drawings in' which:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of a window frame including the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1 with part broken away.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of a portion of the removable guide rail as viewed from line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a view on line 55 of Fig. 3.
' Fig. 6 is a partial view in elevation of a window including a modification of the invention.
Fig. 7 is a section on line '|I of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view showing the operation of the latter.
Fig. 9 is a section on line 9-9 of Fig. 8.
Fig. 10 is a detail in perspective of a portion of Fi '7.
The window frame as shown in Fig. 1 is, as is conventional, a rectangular frame, but in the present construction, is made up of outwardly open channel members l4 and I5 of which the side members l5 (see Fig. 2) are so formed as to provide a deep channel opening outwardly and a shallow channel 1513 opening inwardly of the frame. Adjacent the channel [5B this inward face of member I5 is alsoprovided with a flange 150 the purpose of which will appear later.
Mounted in the channels I5A are other channel members l6 opening inwardly and these constitute the outer margins of the completed frame, the construction of which is described in detail and is being claimed in application Serial No. 728,171, filed February 12, 1947, by the present inventor on Window and of which the present application is a division.
As indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, carried in channels I5B in members IS in a sash guide strip II, this being shown as E-shaped in section with its ribs "A or flanges projecting outwardly from member 15. These ribs I'IA serve as guides for the slidable sash l8 and I9, the sash being provided with grooved side members IBA and 19A adapted to embrace the ribs and slide thereon. The flange C, mentioned above, serves as sealing guide member for the sash ll arranged at the outer face of the window. The grooves in side members IBA and I9A loosely receive the ribs HA, and the two outer sashes l8 are pressed inwardly in any suitable manner against the middle sash I9 as shown in Fig. 2, for example, to seal the joints between the respective sashes.
The sash I8 and H! are shown as glass panelled and screen panelled respectively.
As best shown in Figs. 3 and 8, the guide strips ll are each in two parts, an upper HB and a lower piece NC in alignment therewith. The upper piece 11B is permanently fixed in position in the channel ISB while the lower piece [1C is so arranged as to be removable or tilted (as in Figs. 6 to 10).
In Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the piece "C of the sash guide is shown as being prevented from lateral displacement by its location in a channel I53 and by being notched at its bottom as at HD to fit over a sealing rib 20 carried by the horizontal bottom frame member l4, and is held within the channel 153 and against vertical movement by a pin IIE fixed to the rear surface of the piece I10 and extending through a suitable opening in the side member l5), the head NE of the'pin engaging a spring holding means G.
In the modification shown in Figs. 6 to 10, side frame member H5 is shown as having a plane face I ISA but provided with the flange 15C, while the lower part II'IC of the sash guide is of the same width as the plane face 5A and is arranged to swing outwardly from the top as indicated in Fig. 7, the two parts HIC being connected and operated by a suitable handle I20 if desired. Further, in order to limit such movement and provide added means to prevent horizontal movement, these parts 1C are preferably provided with a suitable button member IZI, passing through a slotted opening I22 in member H5.
At the upper ends of parts H1O a suitable catch I30 for preventing the swinging movement may be provided. Such a catch as shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 10, the catch itself being shown in Fig. 10 as consisting of a small plate provided with a finger piece MBA and an L-shaped flange I30B adapted to slide in suitable grooves in the part TC and the upper fixed part 1B of the sash guide. When the flange I303 is partially in each groove, of course,, the part I "C can not swing.
In the operation of the present invention, as shown in either form, if all of the'sash are fully up, the lower movable part of the sash 'guide rail may be moved out of guide'posltion and the 3 sash then removed at will. Or, depending upon the dimensions of the several parts. in the form showninFigs.6to10,allofthesashmaybein iull "low" position, and all may then be tilted out with the swinging uide portions 1G.
I claim:
In a window, an upright rectangular frame,
opposed vertical guide rails fastened to said frame at opposite sides thereof, each of said guide rails having a plurality of laterally spaced, inwardly extending ribs and corresponding ribs of the guide rails being aligned with each other, a plurality of sashes mounted in the frame for vertical sliding movement on the guide rails, inwardly extending flanges on the frame at opposite sides thereof overlapping one of said sashes and providing a weather seal between the sash and the frame, each sash having vertical grooves in the side edges thereof, the width of the grooves befile of this patent:
FRANK W. KNUI'I'.
