This invention relates to movable shades for windows and has for an object to provide a glass shade having alternate transparent and frosted vertical stripes adapted to mask or unmask corresponding stripes on the Window pane to produce a bright light or a diiused light.
A further object is to provide a device of this character in which the shade is shifted with respect to the window pane to permit washing of the pane and shade.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will be formed of a few strong simple and durable parts, which will be inexpensive to manufacture, and which will not easily get out of order.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without sacrificing any of the advantages or departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure l is a front elevation of a shade constructed in accordance With the invention applied to a Window pane.

Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the shade and the hinge thereof for mounting the same on the Window sash.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary front elevation of a modiiied form of the invention.
Figure 7 is a cross sectional view of the shade shown in Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a detail perspective view of the latching means of the shade shown in Figure 6.
Figure 9 is a detail elevation, with parts in section, showing the latching means in operative position.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, I0 designates a Window casing and II designates the lower sash of the window, the same being equipped with a glass pane I2, which according to the invention, is formed with alternate vertical disposed clear and frosted stripes I3 and I4 of identical width and length, see Figure 1.
The shade comprises a frame including vertical side members I5, see Figure 5, which are connected at the top and at the bottom by channel top and bottom members I6. A glass pan Il is slidably received at the top and at the bottom in the channel top and bottom members I6. The pane is formed with alternate clear and transparent vertical stripes I8 and I9 of identical width and length with respect to each other and with respect to the stripes of the sash pane I2. The pane I1 is of less width than the pane I2 so that it is narrower by the width of one stripe than the sash pane I2, as indicated by the arrow 20, see Figure 5. As a result of this difference in Width the shade pane I1 may be slid transversely in the guides formed by the channel top and bottom members I6 to register the clear stripes of the shade with the clear stripes of the sash pane to permit bright light conditions, or may be slid to register the frosted stripes of the shade with the clear stripes of the sash pane to promote diffused light conditions.
The shade is hinged to swingv out from the sash to permit washing the panes of both the sash and the shade. For this purpose a leaf hinge 2I is applied to one vertical member I5 of the shade frame and to the juxtaposed side of the Window sash II.
A modied form of the invention is shown in Figures 6 to 9 inclusive, in which the shade pane is not slidably mounted, but instead is swingable on centers located at the corners of the shade. In this modified form of the invention the shade pane 2| is carried by a frame including channel side members 22 and channel top and bottom members 23. The pane is provided with alternate clear and frosted vertical stripes 24 and 25. The pane completely lls the frame and the frame is less in width by the Width of two strips than the width of the pane I2 of the sash, see Figure 6.
For mounting the shade on the sash Il, four hinge links 26 are employed, one of which is shown in Figure 8. A hinge link is disposed at each of the upper and lower corners of the shade frames, thelinks at the lower corner only being illustrated, see Figure 7. Each link is provided at one end with a pin 21 adapted to loosely enter an opening in the sash and at the other end is provided with a pin 28 adapted to loosely enter ari opening in the shade frame. As indicated by the arrow heads 29 in Figure 7, the shade may swing on the pins 21, as centers of curvature in either direction across the sash pan I2 to perform the registration of clear stripes of the sash pane with clear stripes of the shade pane, or frosted stripes of the shade pane with clear stripes of the sash pane, as previously described.
For yieldably latching the shade at either limit of its swinging movement, each hinge link 26 is provided at the pin 28 with a leaf spring latch 30 having a projection 3| at the free end. The projection 3l is adapted to enter a socket 32 in the sash frame, see Figure 9, and latch the shade at either limit of its swinging movement.
Since the operation has been described as the description of the parts progressed, it is thought the invention will be fully understood without further explanation.
What is claimed is:
A shade comprising a sash, a pane mounted in the sash having alternate clear and translucent portions, a frame including top and bottom channel members arranged with their open sides in facing relation, said frame Iitting within the sash in contact with the sash pane, a shade pane of a width less than the frame and said sash pane having alternate clear and translucent portions, said shade pane being mounted in said frame with its upper and lower portions slidably mounted in said channel members to adapt it to be moved with relation to said sash pane to register the clear portions of the shade pane with the corresponding portions of the sash pane or register the translucent portions of the shade pane with the clear portions of the sash pane, and means securing the frame to the sash comprising a hinge so as to adapt the shade pane to be swung out of operative relation to the sash pane.
