783,283. Magnetic transducing heads. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 18, 1955 [Aug. 21, 1954], No. 24389/54. Class 40 (2). A magnetic recording, reproducing or erasing head for a magnetic recording or reproducing apparatus comprises a magnetic core 1, 2 having a pair of pole portions 3, 4 defining a non-magnetic gap therebetween and a preformed non- magnetic grooved member 13 embraced by the pole portions in such manner that the latter are disposed in the groove 16 of the member 13, the front surfaces of the pole portions and of the member forming a smooth substantially continuous surface. As shown, a non-magnetic spacer 7 may be disposed in the gap, a winding 10 on a former 11 surrounds rear ends 8 and 9 of the core members, the said continuous surface which is ground or honed is arranged to project through cut-out in a screening can 19 free space in the can being filled with an epoxy resin, and lead wires 22 pass out through a, bush 21. A retainer 24 engaged by a screw 25 secures the head unit in the can 19. The core members 1, 2 may comprise stacks of laminations or, preferably, a hard magnetic ferrite material, and may have similar wear-resisting properties to those of the groove forming portions 14, 15, which may be of ceramic material, of the member 13. The head is applicable to one track of a twin track tape.
