Abstract
782,577. Making heat exchangers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Sept. 9, 1955 [Sept. 21, 1954], No. 27303/54. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XIII] A method of making a heat exchanger such as a condenser for a domestic refrigerator comprises forming a closed groove in a sheet of metal and thereafter sealing together the parts of the sheet at the mouth of the groove to provide a fluid passage constituted wholly by the metal sheet. The drawing shows an example in which a number of such grooves 2 are formed in a steel sheet 1, e.g. by pressing or bending. U-shaped grooves may be formed initially and then closed in any suitable manner. Copper coated U-shaped connecting pieces 3 and inlet and outlet tubes 4, 5 are inserted within the ends of the closed grooves 2 as shown, and copper powder held in any suitable medium is distributed along the joint edges of the grooves before the unit is brazed in a furnace. Clips are provided to hold the grooves closed during brazing, four alternative forms of clip being shown in the drawing.
