In making a cooler for cooling helium in a Stirling cycle engine having at each end a cylindrical flange 1 receiving two metal discs 2, 3 with punched holes 4, a sheet of solder 6 is provided between the discs and with the pipes 5 in the punched holes, the whole assembly is heated in one operation or in two operations, one for each end, to solder the discs together and to the pipes and preferably the discs to the flanges 1. Brazing may be employed.
