782,506. Underground gasification of coal. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS), Ltd. June 17, 1955 [April 29, 1954. No. 12426/54], Drawings to Specification. Class 55 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] In the underground gasification of coal heat from the upcast gas is turned into shaft power in a heat engine and is also used to preheat the downcast air which goes to the underground gasification zone. The stream of upcast gas may pass as working fluid to and be burnt in an internal-combustion engine or gas turbine plant, the exhaust being used to preheat downcast air. In a modification some of the upcast gas may be bled off before the heat engine and burnt to pre-heat the downcast air. When at a high temperature the upcast gas has to be cooled before reaching the heat engine and it is first passed through a heat exchanger which preheats the downcast air. These three arrangements may be used separately or in any combination.
