782,446. Centrifugal pumps. BERESFORD & SON, Ltd., J. Feb. 9, 1956 [Feb. 12, 1955], No. 4243/55. Class 110 (1). A submersible centrifugal pump comprises two or more self-contained electrically-driven pump units having ratings the sum of which is equal to the rating the pump is desired to possess, the outlets of which are adapted to be connected to a common rising main. The pump shown comprises three self-contained submersible pump units 12, each comprising a centrifugal pump 122 driven by an electric motor 121, connected by the three branches 111 of an adaptor 11 to the rising main 10. The separate branches 111 may be replaced by a single outlet manifold. The driving motors may be above instead of below the pumps. Under part-load conditions, one or more pump units only may be operated, each unit incorporating a non-return valve to prevent backflow through the inoperative units.
