Class 17(1) The pad box of a sole press has a sectional pad support, and each section is separately subjected to fluid pressure. Each section carries or constitutes a fluid cylinder or its piston. The diameters of the cylinders are predetermined to give the required proportional upthrust. The construction shown in Fig. 1 of the Provisional Specification comprises two blocks 1, 2 and a hinged flap 3 with an overlying pad 4. The pad and/or support may be carried transversely. Pistons 5, 6 on blocks 1, 2 slide in cylinders 5A, 6A, and flap 3 is pivotally connected to pistons 9, 10 slidable in cylinders 9A and 13, the latter being swivelly supported. All the cylinders are inter-connected and supplied with fluid through conduit 17. Rollers 18 prevent binding under pressure. In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the support comprises hingedly inter-connected heel, waist, and sole members 23, 20, 24 supported respectively by plungers 26, 25, 27 in bores 29, 28, 30. Member 24 comprises a base plate 37 with a guide 36 for roller 34, and a top plate 24A curved transversely and longitudinally and hinged to plate 37 by pin 39, with equalizing springs 40 therebetween. Release valves 43 are inserted in the lines connecting cylinder 28 to cylinders 29, 30 to prevent deformation of the pad assembly by gravity, e.g., when sole laying pressure is removed. Alternatively friction means, e.g. washers, may be fitted to the pivot pins of the articulated components. A hydraulic pump may be included in the cylinder circuit, and used, while the shoe is clamped, to pump oil to each cylinder to force each piston into contact with the shoes. A fluid filled bladder may be used instead of a rubber pad.
