Abstract

A halogen derivative of natural rubber or an unsaturated artificial rubber is prepared by reacting at an elevated temperature and at atmospheric pressure or the elevated pressure generated by the reactants in a closed vessel, and under the influence of a known telomerization catalyst the natural or artificial rubber with a halogen compound known to undergo the telomerization reaction with ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable organic compounds. The halogen compound may comprise hydrogen chloride, phosphorus trichloride, carbon tetrachloride, monochloroacetic acid and, or tri-chloracetic acid. As catalyst may be employed benzoyl or ditertiary butyl peroxide. The reaction may be effected in solution, the solvent being either an inert liquid, or an excess of the halogen compound or may be effected in a mixing machine, or by milling on rolls. The temperature of the reaction is preferably main tained at 70 DEG to 150 DEG C. In one of the described examples 15 grams of natural rubber is dissolved in 1,25 litres of di-tert. butyl peroxide and the mixture refluxed on a water bath for 11 hours, after which the solvent is distilled off for 2 hours. Further solvent is removed by hot air and the reaction product is dried in vacuo. Specification 589,065 [Group IV] is referred to.
