Abstract
Grey vat dyes are obtained by treating with alkaline condensing agents 5-, 6-, 7-, or 8-(a anthraquinonylamino - Ez.1 - benzanthrone carboxylic acid - (a. - anthraquinonyl) - amides, and these dyes may in turn be treated with acid condensing agents to give olive-green vat dyes. Examples describe the condensation of bromobenzanthrone - Bz.1 - carboxylic acid chloride with one mol. of a - aminoanthraquinone, to form the bromobenzanthroneBz.1-carboxylic acid - (o - anthraquinonyl) -amide, which is then subjected to an anthrimide condensation with 1 - aminoanthraquinone or 1 - amino - 5 - benzoylamino - anthraquinone, and the heating of the products obtained with caustic potash in ethanol or methanol, with and without sulphur, to give grey dyes, which in further examples are heated with phosphoric acid, aluminium chloride, or sulphuric acid to give olive-green dyes.
