Abstract

778,793. Photo-conductive devices. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. July 14,1955 [July 23, 1954], No. 20375/55. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (a)] An image intensifier preferably for X-rays, has a photo-conductive layer 3 for receiving the radiation and setting up a conductivity image, and a photo-emissive layer 5 which is irradiated uniformly with infra-red by a lamp 6 and emits an electron image corresponding to the conductivity image. A. voltage gradient is set up across the photo-conductive layer between highresistance layer 4 which separates layers 3 and 5, and a transparent conductive layer 2 on the front face of the photo-conductive layer. The photo-conductive layer may be CdS, CdSe or CdTe; it may be composed of filaments of photo-conductive material embedded in a matrix of glass. After cooling the molten glass in manufacture, the filaments are exposed by grinding. The photo-emissive layer may be caesium silver oxide or caesiated antimony. The high-resistance layer 4 may be carbon, and may be opaque to the infra-red. Transparent conductive layer 2 is of aluminium.
