Abstract

778,531. Brake cylinders. COMPAGNIE DES FREINS ET SIGNAUX WESTING- HOUSE. Jan. 20, 1956 [Jan. 22, 1955], No. 2035/56. Class 103 (1(. A brake cylinder for road and railway vehicles comprises two cylinders 4 and 6 disposed one within the other, the inner cylinder 4 being mounted on or forming part of a piston 2 slidable within the outer cylinder 6 and a piston 7 slidable within the inner cylinder 4 being connectable through a rod 10 to the brake rigging, and separate passages 12 and 13 to the cylinders enabling the supply thereto of pressure fluid from different sources and so arranged that the pistons are movable in the same direction under the action of pressure fluid supplied to their respective cylinders. The construction provides a unitary brake cylinder with independent operation by normal or emergency fluid pressure supply sources. As shown in Fig. 1, the spring 16 is fully compressed by movement of piston 2 through distance L so that pressure applied from the auxiliary source tends to oppose the normal supply but in a further embodiment described having an extended spring 16 the effect of the main and auxiliary pressure supplies may be made additive.
