In order to prevent the boiling of liquid in a hydraulic brake system adjacent to the wheel cylinders, when pressure is released therefrom after a brake application, means such as the valve unit assembly 9, is included in the system which will effect permanent pressurization of the fluid to a predetermined extent sufficient to raise its boiling point above the maximum temperature attained during operation of the brakes. As shown in Fig. 2, the valve unit comprises non-return two-way valves 10 and 11 of non-metallic oil resistant material, the setting of the valves being deterrnined by spacer elements 14. It is necessary for the strength of the pull-off springs of the shoes to be increased sufficiently to lift the valve 11.
