Wheel brakes, applications of.-Aeroplanes are fitted with wheel brakes which can be applied by the pilot to the landing wheels separately or simultaneously only when there is a predetermined pressure on the tail skid, the skid either acting to take up slack in the pilot's brake transmission or effecting the application of the brakes with greater or lesser intensity according to the position of the pilot's control, no other power means being employed. A dashpot device may delay the application of the brakes while permitting instant release. Hydraulic transmission may be employed. In its simplest form a cable 8 connected to the skid 9 moves a pulley 2 to take up the slack in a cable 4 connecting the brake to the pilot's control. The cable 8 may pass through a cylinder containing oil and be connected to a piston having a leak port and a one-way valve to ensure gradual application of the brakes while permitting a quick release. Fig. 3 shows a connection 15 from the skid connected to a block 17 in a slotted lever 16 on the brake shaft 20. The position of the block in the slotted lever is controlled bv the pilot through a connection 19. Both the pilot's control and the skid may actuate pumps delivering fluid to cylinders acting upon the block 17. Fig. 4 shows a hydraulic transmission applied to the form in which the pilot's control is rendered effective or ineffective by the skid. The pilot's control delivers fluid to a cylinder 24 to actuate the brake lever, the cylinder 24 being carried on a piston 21 which is raised and lowered by fluid from a pipe 23 as the skid rises and falls. A valved diaphragm may be inserted in the pipe 23 to ensure gradual application of the brakes.
