Abstract
778,363. Electroluminescence. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. Dec. 31, 1953 [Dec. 31, 1952], No. 36396/53. Class 39(1). Layers of moisture-pervious material seal the light producing layer of an electroluminescent plaque from the atmosphere and are provided on the plaque and on the inside lining of the lampholder, heat being applied to melt the material and form the seal. The layers may be wax and wax-impregnated polyvinyl chloride respectively. The plaque 10 comprises a transparent base 16 transparent conductive coatings 18, 22 and the luminescent layer 20, covered over by a wax coating 24 and the layers are cut away at 42, 44 to permit contact between the electrodes and metal contact fingers 32, 34. These fingers are connected to base pins 28, 30 projecting through the metal case 26 and a sheet of moistureimpervious wax-containing material 14, rubber grommets 35 insulating the pins. Insulating material 38 covers all but the ends of the fingers. After positioning the plaque within the container 14, 26, the edges of the metal case 26 are rolled over and with the application of heat, wax is squeezed out and seals the rolled over edges and joints. The lamp is employed as a clock face, or as a dial for radio sets and instruments. Specifications 717,171 and 724,977 are referred to.
