Abstract

775,190. Electroluminescence. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. July 19, 1954 [July 21, 1953], No. 21044/54. Class 39(1). An electroluminescent lamp of curved shape for signal lighting, film viewing, &c. is made by heating an assembly of a flat glass plate 1, a conductive coating 2 and a layer 7 comprising electroluminescent and ceramic materials in powder form and bending whilst hot, in a mould. A second layer 13 or further layers of powdered ceramic and luminescent material may be applied and fired in the mould before or after pressing. Prior to firing and moulding, a narrow strip 5 of coating 2 is removed and strips 8, 9 of firing silver ink painted on to the exposed coating 2 and the bared strip 5 respectively. After firing, the glass is cut into portions by means of a silicon carbide cutter, masking tape applied to the edges and to the strip 9, and aluminium or other metal vaporized on to the light producing layer and terminal strip 8. Transparent conductive material may be used and it may be covered with a reflective paint or ceramic layer 7. Additional ceramic layers free of luminescent material may be applied. The surfaces may be concave or convex. Specifications 731,364, 731,367 and 733,260 are referred to.
