Abstract

An N-disubstituted dithiocarbamic acid ester containing a sulphonic acid group in the ester residue, or a salt thereof, is produced by heating a salt of a halogeno-alkane sulphonic acid with a salt of an N-disubstituted dithiocarbamic acid in the presence of water or a hydroxyl-containing organic solvent, e.g. alcohol. Suitable salts of dithiocarbamic acids are sodium N,N-dimethyl - dithiocarbamate, potassium N,N - diethyl - dithiocarbamate, sodium N,N - diisopropyldithiocarbamate, the dibutylamine salt of N,N-dibutyldithiocarbamic acid, sodium piperidyl - N - dithiocarbonate, sodium morpholyl - N - dithiocarbonate, sodium piperazine - N,N1 - bis - dithiocarbonate. Salts of halogeno-alkanesulphonic acid specified are bromomethane sulphonic acid, 2-bromo-ethanesulphonic acid - 1, 3 - bromopropanesulphonic acid - 1, 2 - bromo - propanesulphonic acid - 1, 4 - bromobutanesulphonic acid - 1 and 6-bromohexanesulphonic acid-1. Salts of the same base may be used for both reaction components. Such salts may be derived from inorganic bases such as ammonium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, barium, strontium, lead or silver or organic bases such as dimethylamine and trimethylamine. In examples: (1) the pyridine salt of N,N-pentamethylene-dithiocarbamic acid and potassium 3-bromopropane - 1 - sulphonate are dissolved in water and heated together on a water bath, the reaction mixture is neutralized, filtered after addition of carbon and evaporated to dryness, and the N,N - pentamethylene - dithiocarbamic acid - n - propyl ester - o - potassium sulphonate is recovered; (2) diethylamine, carbon disulphide and caustic soda are reacted together and the product is heated with sodium bromoethanesulphonate to form N,N-diethyldithiocarbamic acid-ethyl ester-o -sodium sulphonate.
