Abstract
Diethylaminoaceto-2 : 6-xylidide is prepared by condensing 2 : 6-xylidine with an ester N(C2H5)2.CH2.COX, X being an alkoxy group containing 1-6 carbon atoms by heating a common solution of the two reactants in an anhydrous solvent in the presence of an alkali metal, alkali metal amide or alkali metal hydride. The reaction product can be recovered by heating to remove solvent and low-boiling material, treating the residue with water, or with dilute acid followed by subsequent neutralization, and extracting the neutral or alkaline aqueous solutions so formed. Examples illustrate the use of methyl and ethyl diethylamine-acetates as the second reaction component and the use of sodamide, sodium, lithium and lithium hydride as condensing agents, the solvent being benzene or toluene. The picrate of the product is prepared. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use of alkaline condensing agents in general in the process of the invention and states that the presence of an anhydrous solvent is preferred. Specification 706,409 is referred to.
