Abstract

777,576. Feeding webs. CRABTREE & SONS, Ltd., R. W. June 17, 1955 [March 17, 1954], No. 7776/54. Class 100(1) The leading end, of a web is secured to a web roll, in prep aration for a webrenewing operation by a line or series of dots of self-adhering adhesive which ex tends circumferentially rather than transversely of the web roll. As shown the end 6 of a replacement web roll is unwound and a circumferential line 7 of adhesive is applied to the body 8 of the roll; the end is then rewound and adheres to the body 8. Instead of a continuous line 7, the adhesive can be applied as a line of dots. Alternatively, tabs 10, Fig. 4, carrying adhesive are applied to the outer face of the web-end; in this case the web end 6 has a line 11 of perforations through which the adhesive face of the tab contacts the roll body 8. The tab may alternatively have adhesive on both faces and be applied to the inner face of the perforated web end to contact the roll body, in this case the tab contacts the web from an expiring roll not shown, to effect web renewal through the perforations. In a further modification, an adhesive tab having two leaves receives the web end between its leaves. In each embodiment, the web end is pulled from the roll body when the expiring web is adhered to the leading end of the replacement roll.
