Abstract

A fuel oil composition comprising a major proportion of a vanadium-containing residual oil, contains an oil-soluble or oil-dispersible organic silicon compound to reduce corrosion caused by ash upon combustion. The organic silicon compound may be an organosilane, such as tetrapropyl silane, tetraphenyl silane, tripropyl amyl silane, tripropyl chloroamyl silane, dimethyl dihydroxymethyl silane, hexapropyl disilane and triisobutyl silane; or an organosiloxane or polymer thereof, such as dimethyl silicone and methyl phenyl silicone; or an organosilanol, such as ethylpropylphenyl silanol, tripropyl silanol, triisoamyl silanol and phenylbenzylsilane diol; or silicate esters and their polymers, such as tetramethyl orthosilicate, tetraethyl orthosilicate, tetraorthosilicate and glycol orthosilicate; or silazanes containing the linkage - N - Si - C - ; or aminosilanes such as ditertiarybutoxydiaminosilane; or di- or trihydrocarbonoxysilanes. The silicon compound is added to the oil in an amount sufficient to yield at least one atom weight of silicon per atom weight of vanadium in the oil. The residual oil may have distillate oils added to it. Examples are given. U.S.A. Specification 2,566,363 is referred to.
