Abstract
Corrosion in internal-combustion engines is avoided by employing a fuel comprising principally petroleum hydrocarbons and containing dissolved or suspended therein an alkyl ester of a sulphur-free acid of phosphorus. Suitable esters are the alkyl esters of phosphoric or phosphorous acid, such as trimethyl, triethyl or tributyl phosphates or phosphites or the corresponding mono- or di-esters. Salts of the esters, particularly organic base salts such as diethyl amylamine phosphate may alternatively be employed. The esters or their salts may be incorporated in a vehicle consisting of a glyceride, wax, ester or fatty alcohol, e.g. cetyl alcohol, cholesterol, lanosterol or mixtures thereof, and the composition added to the fuels. Where the vehicle is suitable for use as an upper cylinder lubricant, small gaseous or vaporous inclusions may be incorporated in the composition, thereby producing a lubricant of the character claimed in Specification 460,345. The fuel employed may contain tetraethyl lead with or without organic halides such as ethylene dichloride or ethylene dibromide. Alternatively, the tetraethyl lead with or without organic halides may be added to the alkyl ester-vehicle composition.
