Abstract

A liquid fuel for internal combustion engines contains dissolved therein a alkyl or cycloalkyl ester of boric acid or of a boronic or borinic acid, the ester containing at least one group of not less than 5 carbon atoms and containing no group of more than 20 carbon atoms. Esters referred to are tri (methyl isobutyl carbinyl) borate, tri-amyl borate, tri-octyl borate and tri-nonyl borate (derived from a mixture of nonanols made by the oxo process); di (methyl isobutyl carbinyl) methylboronate; cyclic esters derived from boric acid and 2, 4-pentane diol, pinacol, 2, 4-dimethylpentane-2, 4-diol or 2, 4-dimethylhexane 2, 4-diol; 2, 4-pentane diol methylboronate and hexylene glycol n-butyl-boronate; ethyl 2, 4-dimethylhexane-2, 4-diol borate, ethyl pentane-2, 4-diol borate, ethyl pinacol borate and ethyl 2-methylpentane-2, 4-diol borate. The use of tri (diisopropylcarbinyl) borate and of a mixture of an amyl borate and oil-soluble mercury compounds is disclaimed. Fuels specified are straight run, reformed or thermally or catalyically cracked gasoline, which may contain a tetraalkyl lead, for example tetramethyl lead, and a lead scavenger such as ethylene dibromide and/or chloride, or other antiknock compounds such as iron carbonyl and dicyclopentadienyl iron, benzene, kerosine, gas oil and alcohols or mixtures thereof. The fuels may also contain 2, 4-dimethyl-6-tert.-butyl phenol, 2, 6-di-tert.-butyl-4-methyl phenol, hydroquinone, N-phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine and N.N1-dibutyl-P-diphenylenediamine, leaded gasolines may contain the additional scavengers, such as tricresyl phosphate, described in Specification 683,405.
