Abstract

[Also in Groups X and XXXIV] A transport means comprising a track along which a number of balls or rollers are placed so that an object to be transported can be rolled over them while rolling them along the track has means to retain the balls or rollers yieldably at given stations therealong prior to engagement with the object so that the rollers in advance of the object will be engaged by it in such a way that transportation will occur without the balls or rollers fouling one another. The load 23 such as a glass-house, safe or the like is mounted on or attached to "T-", Fig. 2, or " V-", Fig. 10, shaped runners 4 or 24 which bear on two rows of balls 3 running in channel tracks 1 or 1a. The balls 3 are freely mounted in and held at suitably spaced intervals along the channel 1 by permanent magnets 6 carried by brass members 7 screwed into the vertical walls of the channel 1 or 1a. Should the balls 3, due to unevenness of the track, move out of contact with the runners 4 or 24, a flexible length of cable material 10, mounted on the bottom of the runners 4 or 24 and outwardly biased by torsion springs 14 or 27 engaging lugs 13 on the cables 10, bears against the balls 3 to move them along the channel track 1. In order that the runners 4 engage the balls 3 smoothly they are provided front and rear with prow-like pieces 8. The slightly tapered web 8b of the piece 8 is provided with recesses on each side in which are clamped by a " U-" shaped plate 16 ferrules 10a attached to the ends of the cables 10. Lengths of channel 1 are joined end-to-end by a stud 19 engaging a hole 20 and bolts passing through registering holes 21, 22. Steam or hot water pipes may be housed in the hollow of the " V "-shaped runners 24 when used with glass-houses. The Provisional Specification mentions that the tracks may be slightly inclined and that the balls may be held at spaced intervals along the track by upwardly bowed springs arranged on the horizontal portion of the track.
