Abstract

776,668. Liquid-blast switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and TAYLOR, S. Aug. 31, 1955 [May 31, 1954], No. 16088/54. Class 38(5) In an impulse type liquid-blast switch, liquid, e.g. oil, under relatively high pressure is applied above a piston 20 to open the contacts 15, 19 and to cause a flow of oil through the arc space. As the moving contact rod is moved down by the piston, an aperture 28 in the rod 19 is first moved below the top of the cylinder 12 so that oil can flow into and through the hollow contact 19 to the arcing space. When the contacts have. separated by a further amount, one or more larger apertures 28 move below the top of the cylinder so that a more powerful flow of oil is obtained. When the contacts are fully open, the end of a guide rod 21 plugs a hole 29 in the hollow contact rod 19 and stops the flow of oil. A spring 24 closes the contacts when the oil pressure is cut off. A number of the units shown may each be supported on pillar insulation 3 and be grouped around a central hollow insulator 2 through which pressure oil may be supplied to a chamber 32 from which oil pipes radiate to the respective switch units. A piston 8 biased by a spring 31 in the chamber permits the impulse to be imparted to arccontaminated oil 7 without fouling clean oil 6 from the pressure source which may be of the pneumatic-hydraulic type. According to the Provisional Specification a rubber bag may be used in place of the piston 8.
