Abstract
776,558. Mercury switches. JONES, D. G. Sept. 28, 1955 [Sept. 30, 1954], No. 28258/54. Class 38(5) The mercury in a sealed container 1 is divided into two pools 5 by an annular insulating separator 4, the circuit between the two electrodes 3 being completed by downward movement of an insulating plunger 6 to displace the mercury over the top of the separator. The plunger comprises a cylindrical inner part 7 and an annular outer part 8 having embedded therein an annuler electrode 10 connected to a conductor 11 having an extension 12 contacting the inner pool. The electrode 10 serves to reduce the field strength in the region of the interrupting arc. The concentric mercury pools produce a magnetic field tending to extinguish the arc and this effect may be enhanced by enclosing a magnetic ring in the top rim of the separator 4. Holes for the passage of the arc gases may be provided in the plunger parts 7, 8 near the mercury surface to further facilitate the arc extinction. An iron annulus 9 on the plunger permits it to be displaced by energization of a, coil 13 or by movement of a permanent magnet. In a modification (not shown) the mercury normally completes the circuit between the electrodes 3 and the plunger is raised to interrupt the circuit.
