Abstract
857,392. Mercury switches. REBAUQUECKSILBER - RELAISBAU G.m.b.H. Sept. 12, 1958, No. 29342/58. Class 38 (5). An electromagnetic relay with mercury contacts in a sealed tube has its components encased in a compound 25 such as an epoxy resin which is moulded around the components so as to hold them in position. A mounting-plate 27 may be cast in position with the assembly or may be secured to a threaded bush (not shown) which is placed in the mould with the other components. The sealed tube has two metal parts 8, 9 separated by resin 10, and to which the connectors 7, 7<SP>1</SP> are soldered. A quartz or ceramic insulator 11 separates the upper end of the part 9 from the cap part 8. The tube is partially filled with mercury 12 in which a magnetic float 13 normally maintains an insulating pot 14 so that the mercury therein, which is in contact with an electrode 15 welded to cap 8, is separated from the mercury 12. When the coil 2 is energized the float 13 is attracted to bridge a non-magnetic insert 17 in the part 9 and the mercury in the pot 14 combines with the mercury 12, to complete a circuit between the connectors 7, 7<SP>1</SP>. The float is guided for vertical movement by an apertured disc 18 engaging the pot 14 and by cams, balls or rollers 16 which bear on the inside wall of the part 9. The part 8 has an inwardly-bent flange 24 which, if there is an explosion within the tube, will engage a shoulder 23 of the part 9 and prevent separation of the parts 8, 9.
