Abstract

575,791. Mercury switches. WADSWORTH & SONS, Ltd., W., KERSE, W. H., and DISLEY, H. J. April 5, 1944, No. 6372. [Class 38 (v)] A mercury type switch consists of a closed vessel containing a pool of mercury, upon which floats a hollow vessel also containing a pool or pools of mercury into each of which dips an electrode, the mercury in the two vessels being normally out of contact, a ring-like armature within the closed vessel and surrounding the hollow one being capable of movement under the influence of a magnet outside the closed vessel, so as to tilt the hollow vessel, and cause the mercury in the pools to merge making contact between electrodes. In Figs. 1 and 2 the partition c divides the hollow vessel c into two parts, the two pools merging through an aperture f in the partition, when the vessel is tilted, by movement of the armature i, the opposite end of the vessel being prevented from being depressed by means of prongs k. In a modification Fig. 4 (not shown), electrodes dip into the pool of mercury in the closed vessel and into two smaller pools in the hollow vessel, the three being connected when the latter is tilted.
