Abstract

A binder for a brake lining composition is an aqueous emulsion formed by heating together a mixture of a phenol cashew nut shell oil, an aldehyde, an alkaline catalyst and water. The phenol may be hydroxy benzene, cresols or xylenols or mixtures thereof. Formalin is the preferred aldehyde. Furfural, paraformaldehyde or hexamethylenetetramine may be used. The molar proportion of aldehyde is less than that of the phenols and hexamethylenetetramine is added to the compositions as a curing agent. The cashew nut shell oil is preferably thickened by heating first at 250-300 DEG F. and then at 550 DEG F. The ingredients are mixed by stirring preferably with a little anti-foaming agent, e.g. "D.C. 200 fluid," then heated under reflux and cooled. The dry materials of the brake lining are mixed and compounded with the resin emulsion in a dough mixer. The mixture is then extruded, cut to length and cured, e.g. at 400 DEG F. for 2 hours. Ingredients of the compositions are asbestos film, friction dust, mineral fillers, e.g. barytes, magnesium oxide or manganese dioxie, colouring agent, dry powdered thermosettable resin, hexamine and resin-emulsion binder.
