Abstract

Mixtures for condensation to thermosetting resins comprise aniline, an aldehyde and anacardic materials, viz. cashew nutshell liquid or distillates, distillation residues, or hydrogenation products thereof, e.g. as described in U.S.A. Specifications 2,058,456, 2,067,919, 2,181,189 and 2,128,247; polymerized cashew nutshell liquid, as described in U.S.A. Specifications 2,176,059, 2,240,038, 2,292,611, 2,317,585 and 2,338,230, may be employed. Any two reactants may be reacted together and the product with the third. The fusible thermo-setting resin may be used for coating and impregnating paper, cloth, metal and wood, e.g. for making brake linings and clutch facings; the final infusible resins in finely divided form may be used as friction material in such friction elements comprising asbestos and like fibrous material and a binder, e.g. a phenol aldehyde resin. The addition of the aniline-aldehyde resin even in small amounts up to 1 per cent reduces the tendency to spontaneous combustion of the comminuted cashew nutshell liquid resins. Up to 33 per cent may, however, be added. In examples (1), (2) and (3), the reactants are finally cured at 260-275 DEG F., to give an infusible resin which is ground; an intermediate ground resin may be admixed with asbestos with or without another binder such as a second phenolic resin; (5), (6) and (7), coating compositions are described with xylol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol and petroleum spirits as solvents, to the last of which an alkaline material such as hexamethylene tetramine may be added to improve the curing.
